Spironolactone Tablets

[Indications] Spironolactone tablets are a potassium-sparing aldosterone antagonist indicated for oedematous states such as congestive heart failure, hepatic ascites and nephrotic oedema, for hypertension as an adjunct to other treatment, for the diagnosis and treatment of primary hyperaldosteronism, and for the prevention of hypokalaemia during treatment with potassium-wasting diuretics.

[Usage and dosage] Give orally. For oedema in adults, the usual dose is 40 to 120 mg daily in two to four divided doses for at least five days, then adjusted according to response; for hypertension, a starting dose of 40 to 80 mg daily is used; and in primary hyperaldosteronism, preoperative doses of 100 to 400 mg daily are given. Serum potassium and renal function must be monitored because of the risk of hyperkalaemia.
