Tolbutamide Tablets

[Indications] Tolbutamide is a first-generation sulfonylurea indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate type 2 diabetes mellitus that is not adequately controlled by diet alone, in patients whose pancreatic beta cells still secrete insulin and who have no severe complications.

[Usage and dosage] Give orally with meals. The usual adult dose is 0.5 g once or twice daily to start, taken before breakfast or before breakfast and lunch, increased step by step as required; the usual maintenance dose is about 1.5 g daily, and the maximum is 3 g daily in divided doses. Blood glucose must be monitored because of the risk of hypoglycaemia, particularly in elderly patients and in those with renal or hepatic impairment.
