Mannitol injection

[Indications] Mannitol injection is an osmotic diuretic indicated for the treatment of cerebral oedema and raised intracranial pressure, for the reduction of raised intraocular pressure, for the diagnosis and treatment of oliguria in acute renal failure, for promoting the excretion of certain poisons, and for irrigation in selected surgical procedures.

[Usage and dosage] Administer by intravenous infusion, usually as a 20% solution. For raised intracranial pressure, the usual adult dose is 0.25 to 2 g/kg infused over 30 to 60 minutes; for oliguria, a test dose of 0.2 g/kg is given over 3 to 5 minutes; and for poisoning, 50 g is infused to maintain a high urine output. Serum electrolytes, osmolality, and renal function must be monitored, and mannitol must be used cautiously in patients with heart failure.
