[Indications] 5% glucose (dextrose) infusion provides water and calories and is indicated as a source of carbohydrate and fluid in patients who cannot take them by mouth, as a vehicle for the intravenous administration of compatible medicines and electrolytes, and for the correction of dehydration when only modest carbohydrate intake is required.

[Usage and dosage] Administer by intravenous infusion at a rate determined by the fluid and calorie requirements of the patient; a common adult maintenance rate is 2 to 4 mL/kg per hour, with each 500 mL given over 2 to 8 hours. Blood glucose should be monitored during high-volume or prolonged infusion, particularly in patients with diabetes mellitus.
