[Indications] 10% glucose (dextrose) infusion supplies water and carbohydrate and is indicated for the treatment of hypoglycaemia and for the provision of calories in patients who cannot take carbohydrate by mouth; it is also used as a vehicle for compatible medicines. Because of its osmotic load, it is not suitable as a fluid replacement solution on its own.

[Usage and dosage] Administer by intravenous infusion. To correct hypoglycaemia in an adult, 10 to 20 g of glucose (100 to 200 mL of the 10% solution) is infused and the blood glucose is rechecked; in children, 2 mL/kg of 10% glucose is given. For nutritional maintenance, the volume is determined by the patient's calculated energy and fluid requirements, and blood glucose must be monitored during use.
