Nitroprusside Sodium Injection

[Indications] Sodium nitroprusside injection is indicated for the immediate reduction of blood pressure in hypertensive crises, for controlled hypotension during anaesthesia and for the treatment of acute heart failure with low output when used with invasive monitoring in an intensive-care setting.

[Usage and dosage] Administer by continuous intravenous infusion with an infusion pump, using a diluted solution protected from light. The usual adult starting rate is 0.3 micrograms/kg per minute, titrated to response; the usual effective range is 0.5 to 3 micrograms/kg per minute, and the maximum rate is 10 micrograms/kg per minute for no longer than 10 minutes. Arterial blood pressure must be monitored continuously, and the risk of cyanide and thiocyanate toxicity limits prolonged use.
